I wish I could start off this blog with a crazy statistic about how much time was spent in front of computer screens in 2013, but to be quite honest we were too busy staring at computer screens all year to keep track of said statistic. To sum up 2013 in one word, we'll go with the word "post" for 200. Post as in post-production, you know the work you do AFTER you finish shooting your film. Yes, that's right, once the film is shot there's more to do and in many cases, that's when the hard part begins...
2013 started off with Sara and Graham working together on editing the film from their respective areas of the country. It was a lengthy process indeed, consisting of several edits of the film all accompanied by outside feedback in regards to each edit. During this time is when the film really began to take shape and the story of Parallax truly emerged through this process. For those of you unfamiliar with editing a film, it's tedious and time consuming and understandably can be downright frustrating. But Sara and Graham did an amazing job of keeping it together and in June of this year we hit picture lock with a beautifully developed narrative.
Now some people may wonder "so where the heck is the film then?" at this point. Well, some films at this point may have called it a day and released to the public, but for our team there was still much work ahead.
The next step in our process was beginning visual effects work with our team of 4 artists and their supervisor Vineeth over at Visual Kraft in Los Angeles. This team had quite a road ahead of them as Parallax is a very visual effects intensive film. Over the next few months, Vineeth and his team had the responsibility of doing work on over 40 different shots covering a wide array of tasks that should hopefully blow your mind (or at least hide any mistakes you may have noticed otherwise).
During this time, the final score for the film was being developed by Graham and our composer Chris and in late June, we traveled to Chris' home in Charleston, South Carolina where we recorded the final score at Charleston Sound Studios.
With our final score in place, our remaining sound needs were placed in the hands of our amazing team at Ground Control Studio in Brooklyn, New York. These guys are great at what they do and absolutely killed it for us. Post-production sound for a feature length film is a monster task including hours of cleaning up dialogue, recording sounds to be placed in the film, creating tones to develop the overall feeling for the film, and many more tasks in between. There's an old film saying that says "sound is 51% of the film" and we feel good with what this team has accomplished.
And last but not least, down the street from our friends at Ground Control, our title designer Ira began working on the opening title credit sequence for our film and after a few weeks of revisions, we had a great title sequence on our hands.
At some point in late August, all of these different elements came together and we had a film that was ready to start submitting to film festivals. The first two on our list were Sundance and Slamdance, two notable festivals taking place in Park City, Utah at the beginning of each year. Following these submissions, we continued our pattern by submitting to another 35+ festivals over the next few months spanning all over America and some other parts of the world.
The end of this year has shown a return to the visual effects world of Parallax as we have hired a team from Serbia led by artist Stanisa Naumovski to finish off our visual effects needs. With roughly six weeks of work under the belt, this team has shown great promise in finishing off our visual effects into the upcoming 2014 year.
All said, 2013 was a monster year for our team. We succesfully added 30+ members to our family (many of which aren't even mentioned in this blog), submitted to 35+ film festivals, and have gotten VERY close to completing our team's first ever feature length film. As we enter 2014, expectations are high for an incredible year ahead of us with a finished film, trips to film festivals, and theatrical releases in several markets around the United States. Keep an eye out for our next blog in the upcoming weeks "What does 2014 bring?"
Until next time-
